Whenever people head over to the Peru Amazon and Puerto Maldonado in particular, they try to have an idea of what activities they can take part in and ask for Puerto Maldonado Information. The list can be pretty extensive, however as always in order to make your trip easier and more enjoyable we’ve put together a list of activities you should consider when heading to Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian Amazon.
Piranha fishing in the Amazon: Piranha Fishing is a rather popular activity which is greatly enjoyed by the arriving tourist. Most agree it is an absolute hoot; great fishing skills are not really needed here. You have a pretty standard rod without a reel on it, some fishing line attached and a hook. You put your chunk of raw meat on the hook and then throw the line over, wait momentarily for a slight pull and yank it towards you. Almost instantly there's a cute piranha on the end gracing you with a large fanged smile.
Once you have the fish you need to be careful because when you yank it into the boat they normally land in the vicinity of exposed toes. The fish can then be cooked (most likely fried) for you to get a taste but probably not before your guide gives you a demonstration of the power in the jaws of these little fish.
Peru Amazon Bird watching: This part of the world is graced with plenty of wildlife diversity particularly in the Amazon region. Bird watching is something pretty amazing thanks to the vast variety of Amazon species ready for you to see and photograph. You will have a great time taking the Amazon bird watching tours here, particularly the one which takes you to the clay lick where you can see Macaws, parrots and parakeets.
Peru Amazon Hiking Tours: Tours through the lush rainforest have a rather special feel to them. You know you are walking through one of the most exotic destinations in the world where you will have the chance to see some incredible flora and fauna which is only native to this region. Starting with some light tours is recommended to begin to get a feel for the type of trekking this place requires. They are a good introduction to the ecosystem; your guide will help by providing knowledge and explanations of the natural sights and sounds.
Butterfly Farm: The Peru Amazon jungle is home to many species of insects and happens to be a great place to see butterflies. If this interests you then by all means head over to the Butterfly Farm. The sheer variety of the different butterflies is rather overwhelming. You will see what enclosures butterflies live in and "feeding stations" scattered throughout with pieces of fruit to attract the butterflies down. It offers the chance to get up close and personal. Some interesting information you will learn is how the normal butterfly life span is only about one month but the Heliconius Butterfly can extend its lifespan to three months when necessary by eating a certain plant.
