Here is the second part of our Puerto Maldonado information guide so you can better anticipate your much awaited journey into the Amazon Rainforest.
Inkaterra Amazon Reserve: The Reserva Amazonica is an all-inclusive jungle lodge, a combination of rustic and remote jungle life with luxury amenities. This is definitely a great way to get to know the Amazon rainforest.
The courteous Inkaterra staff will come meet you as soon as you step off the plane. They wiil handle your baggage, check-in information and most importantly be ready to provide the entertainment. Each arriving group of guests has their own personal guide assigned which will not only inform on activities, but also answer any questions and make sure everything is going nicely. All activities are included; you can either choose to do as many as you can or none at all if you are just looking forward to lounging and getting some pisco sours. From here you can go visit the butterfly farm, go on a nature walk or even go on a night river tour where you can see caiman.
The Inkaterra is actually pure luxury: beautiful cabanas, very comfortable beds, it’s actually very beautiful in that rustic way. The main lodge will offer food and drinks 24 hours a day. Imagine this setting: At night you enjoy a few cocktails while discussing the activities to took part in during your day, and then proceed to the delicious buffet right smack in the middle of the jungle.
Canopy Walks: The Amazon has a lot to offer regarding wildlife, now imagine being able to be up close to various species of Amazon birds and playful monkeys. The wooden bridges are originally used for wildlife research but can also be accessed by travelers. It’s pretty amazing being on a suspended wooden bridge among these Amazon giant trees, you will be able to see and photograph animals which would be almost invisible to you from the Amazon floor.
Sandoval Lake: Sandoval Lake is located 20 minutes from Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios region. It is a beautiful, typical rainforest lake surrounded by an incredible landscape. It’s a very nice 5 km hike to the banks of the lake but it is also very hot so take plenty of water(hey you’re in the Amazon what do you expect). Once you reach the lake you can board a canoe and paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty provided by the surrounding landscape. The wildlife here is also pretty cool kingfishers, herons, hoatzins, several species of monkeys and much more including giant river otters also known as river wolves. Piranha fishing is also an available activity as well as swimming in the lake.
