The Nazca lines have been a source of intrigue and mystery to scientists as well as people around the world ever since they were discovered. The Nazca lines are one of Peru’s greatest attractions; they are a series of shapes situated in the Nazca desert. There are hundreds of figures with different shapes and sizes, each ranging in complexity. Some are simple lines others spiders, hummingbirds, fish, sharks, orcas, llamas and lizards among others. There are even figures that resemble giant humanoid shapes, making them even more interesting.
Not much is known about these lines, their significance is still shrouded in Mystery. Scholars have various theories about the Nazca lines; some believe the geometric shapes could indicate the flow of water or be some kind of connection to a ritual with the purpose of summoning water. Other shapes such as the spiders, birds and plants are believed to have been symbols of fertility, many other explanations vary from; irrigation schemes, giant astronomical calendars or even landing symbols for spaceships (this last one being the featured origin in a discovery channel special).
In 1985, the archaeologist Johan Reinhard presented the theory that the lines and figures can be explained as part of religious practices involving the worship of deities associated with the availability of water and thus the fertility of crops. The lines were interpreted as being primarily used as sacred paths leading to places where these deities could be worshiped, and the figures as symbolically representing animals and objects meant to invoke their aid. However, the precise meanings of many of the individual geoglyphs remain unsolved as of 2009 and still to this day nobody can really place a theory which specifies what they are for.
