Puerto Maldonado is a key jumping off point for tours of the Amazon ranging from a couple of days to week long adventures. A former rubber boomtown, now gold mining and tourism sustain this relaxed Amazonian town. Nearby are the Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. These are some of the most pristine primary rain forests in the world, which include several oxbow lakes and clay licks, where hundreds of birds including macaws feed on clay. Some of the most unspoilt yet accessible jungle locales in the country, served by some excellent accommodation options for travelers who want just a touch of luxury. Puerto Maldonado gives the traveler the chance to see, feel and hear the Amazonian jungle like nowhere else in Peru. Visitors are likely to see many different kinds of flora and fauna. Monkeys are ubiquitous as are the mosquitoes! Other animals commonly seen are turtles, caimans, the ever lovable capybara, parrots and with a fishing line, piranhas.
